Welcome to The Dabbler Effect blog!
Thanks for visiting my blog! I truly appreciate the time you took out of your day to explore this personal space of mine, where I plan on sharing various interests that I merely dabble on, but plan to transform into skills that I could be proud of through real experiences.
Why I made this blog
I came up with the name “The Dabbler Effect” from the root word “dabble”—which means to “take part in an activity in a casual or superficial way—and from the Physics concept called “The Doppler Effect.” To be honest, I thought I was being witty by coming up with that name, but apparently there was a paper published in 1995 by Frances Gray also named The Dabbler Effect. Gray, a piano teacher from Arkansas, said that “Too many young people today seem to want a little bit of this, a little of that, a little of something else, never staying with anything very long. In other words, they dabble.” This is indicative of where I am currently; I’ve always been passionate about Photography, Music, Writing, and many other interests, but I never really invested a lot of time in each one such that I could be proficient in the skills that I have acquired. Gray put it best when he argued against dabbling, “You want to put this piece into the microwave and what it needs is a slow cooker.” Hopefully, through this blog, I can place much needed focus into my interests, and stray away from the act of dabbling.
What I plan on sharing
What is the use of newly learned information if we don’t retain it? It is known that we can retain knowledge better if we write about it, so not only can I explore my interests further but I can also share it with anyone who visits this website.
My main passions in life currently are Men’s Fashion and Photography, which conveniently go hand in hand. However, I’m also passionate about a wide array of other things. New York City is a great example: widely regarded as one of the most diverse cities in the world, I’ve always wanted to learn about the city’s different neighborhoods, best places to eat on a cold winter’s night, and bars to hear the smoothest jazz music. But whatever passion it is, I’m willing to share it, and maybe I’ll learn a thing or two about myself aside from what I’m writing about itself.
The incentive of being able to write, capture, and share my interests in life offers me a chance to systematically forge a deeper connection with each interest, one thing I’ve been trying to do for a very long time.
